Vegetarian Layered Tortilla Casserole - prepared by the kitchen at James Beard award winning chef Hugo Ortega's Hugo's restaurant -  purchased in the Meal Simple department of HEB's Bellaire Market to heat and serve at home.  The dish is listed on Hugo's in-house menu.

Texas Gumbo


George & Rubie's Texas Gumbo - a gumbo based on; charros and Tejano rice instead of roux, with smoked jalapeno sausage, diced chicken, shrimp and crawfish, plus onions, jalapenos, etc.


Made exclusively for HEB, available in the frozen foods sections.  Packaged like a casserole but it's a soup.  The company lists a Webster PO Box.

Surprisingly spicy for a supermarket frozen entree.

Cuban Torta

Not sure if this was labeled as a Cuban Torta or Torta Cubana on the menu board.  It has some of the ingredients of a typical Torta Cubana (which is not the same thing as a Cubano) but not all.  Milanesa, ham, julienned wiener, mayonesa, refritos, avocado, tomato and lettuce on an un-toasted  telera roll.  The sandwich weighed 17.5 oz.

Comida Corrida


A Prixe Fixe three course lunch for those on the run, starting with Sopita de Tortilla, a cup of rich
Tortilla Soup with green, red and yellow tortilla strips, avocado and crema in a broth based on pasilla chiles,

a main of Carnitas Tacos with onion and cilantro, a cup of refritos negroes with queso fresco, and a smoky salsa,

and a dessert of Corn Mousse.  There are at least three choices for each course and each diner gets a liter of agua fresca to accompany the meal, plus a liter of water.  This was Agua Fresca de Melon.  The drinking glasses are made of old bottles.

Cuchara - Comida Corrida


1 Liter aguafresca - cucumber and lime

Consomme de Borrego - lamb soup with potatoes, chickpeas, tomatoes, ancho chile and more

Tamal de Cazuela - baked corn tamale with a filling of ground beef, slivered almonds, olives and raisins, dressed with crema, served with a smoky salsa and refritos negros con queso.

A desert course also followed but I neglected to get a picture;  It was a sweet corn cake.

One of the menu options for the day is announced at 11 am on Facebook, but there are always options plus the regular menu.
